Capello Set To Deny Beckham His 100th Cap
New England manager Fabio Capello may well leave David Beckham out of his inaugural squad for the forthcoming friendly against Switzerland.
Former England captain David Beckham, 32, has 99 international caps to his name but may have to wait before reaching the coveted century because of concerns that he may not be match-fit.
Fabio Capello is considering who to include in his squad for his first game as England manager.
The Three Lions face Switzerland a week on Wednesday, and the Italian coach will be anxious to get his managerial reign up and running with a victory to signal the start of a bright new era for the English national team.
There had been speculation that Capello might award Beckham his 100th England cap in that game as a symbolic gesture, but it has been reported that Capello has told his 'inner circle' that he will be leaving the former Real Madrid midfielder out of the squad.
Capello will announce his 22-man squad for the Switzerland game on Saturday and Beckham is not expected to be included.
Apparently the manager will try to speak to Beckham this week before finalising his selection, but he has said privately that the player cannot be fully match-fit because he has not played a competitive game since late November.
Beckham's club side, Los Angeles Galaxy, are between seasons, and Capello has also questioned whether the standard of Major League Soccer is high enough to prepare Beckham for international football.
However, Capello will not close the door on Beckham's international career just yet, and in fact he sees Beckham still having a role to play when England embark on their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Capello's stance underlines the fact that he will not be swayed by sentiment over the pragmatic question of what is best for the team - and Beckham himself would no doubt endorse that.
According to the Guardian, Capello has been impressed by what he has seen of other contenders for the Beckham position of wide right midfielder.
In particular, Tottenham's Aaron Lennon and Blackburn's David Bentley have caught his eye, and the newspaper says Capello believes both the younger men have more persuasive claims than Beckham, on current form, for inclusion.
Beckham is training with Arsenal to try and retain his fitness, and his efforts in that respect have apparently impressed Capello. But the manager is not convinced that Beckham is ready for international football at the moment.
Capello has also made it clear that neither Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development, nor Brian Barwick, chief executive, will have any say in his squad selection. He intends to start as he means to continue - by picking players purely on merit.
Earlier this month Capello said Beckham could still "give a lot" for England. He knows the player's qualties well from their time together at Real Madrid last season, when Capello gained much respect for Beckham's attitude and application.
Beckham was not included in the first England squad selected by Steve McClaren, but fought his way back into the team 11 months later and took his caps tally to 99. One more and he will join the exclusive club of England centurions, whose members are Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright.
