本港IT業為何難以做大？

一直以來，我感覺本港IT業都是以零售或者設計周邊產品為主，現在流行的電子商務一直就無法大規模發展。
包括台灣也是如此，許多人羨慕內地有淘寶、京東這樣的電商。
這是為何？與本地人口數量相對較少，所以客戶群體不大有關係嗎？

I think this is because there is not much innovation in HK.  Most of the new technology are developed in the leading countries such as US, Japan and German.  If you know how to copy leading company's technology, you might be able to grow big.  淘寶 copied Ebay, Baidu copied Google.  Also a company needs to grow big and fast in order to drive innovation.  Developing new technology is not cheap.  Smaller company doesn't have the resources.  US is different, a lot of high tech people work in big companies to get experience and training.  After they acquired the necessary skills, the quit and start their own company.  Culture is different in HK.  Most people are happen if they can find a stable good paying job in HK.

Is this for real?  Programer, database admin, network engineer make about 20000 HKD a month?  That sounds very very low....  any body working on this field can comment on this?  I would expect at least 3-40000 HKD a month for 2 to 3 years experiences....  IT usually get higher pay compare to other job.
