Talking about Bosses;  

A few years ago I asked for money to setup a firewall.

The boss said "Firewall" what is that and why do you need it ?

... hmm to stop outsider from hacking into our network ...

The Boss said "Why would anyone want to hack into our network ? We are not a bank!  What can they steal ?"

Bosses..  you can't live with them and you can't live without them!

Bosses won't spend money on something that they don't understand. It is nature.

The core problem is: the position of IT department in a company is too low in HK, no say at all.

If a cleaner asks me to buy a new XXX machine to clean the toilet better, I most probably reject this proposal.

MsLittle, with increase of privacy awarenes, it might be easier to get boss to agree these  days.
I used to run a diskless Linux box as firewall. No need to get boss approval bcz I used colleagues' discarded machines to build it.

Bosses won't spend money on something that they don't understand. It is nature ...

In Business the Bottom line is Money.

An internal IT department never makes any money.  It exist to spend money.

The trick is to market the department as "SAVING MONEY"!


of course that is easier said than done.

haha, those hackers, though makes trouble, are friends of IT guys !!!

That made me thought of the Y2K crises issue: don't know who smart guy create such crises, which lead IT business had a good time for years!

good point!

That need a smart guy who can convince the boss that IT can save money.

But, unfortunately, many bosses not willing to pay good for IT department. So in those companies, the in-house IT guys are not smart guys.

but it is always the sales department get the most bonus, while IT only has a little....
