I disagree. America has the MOST competitive consumer product market in the ENTIRE world.
For example, today, 50 inches LED HDTV, full HD 1080p, HDMI, for sales at Fry's Electronics for US$399 each, retail, satisfaction guarantee. You can return this when you find any problem. I found Hong Kong and China stores are high prices, poor customer services, and no return of defective products. You can buy same car in America at half the price you pay in Hong Kong and China; except in America you have 5 to 10 years of free service warranty and free replacement of defective parts.

I believe Costco model in China should be very successful. Best example, Walmart is winning in China, big time. Chinese consumers are not stupid, they shall appreciate great discount to buy the BEST value genuine top brand products in a warehouse, namely Costco.

Chinese customers are quite different and that's the main point.
Price war in China is keen and common. Quality of the product is often comprised but consumers are not awared of or they simply do not care.  They just want to buy a product with a good brand name and a low price tag, without worrying much about the details.  That's also why so many fake products are found in China.
Shopping is also a social class indicator. People in the upper middle class in China do not care that much of the price difference. And they don't want to be looked upon as budget buyers.
Some people argue that there is no middle class in China.

No chance for Costco or similar super stores in Hong Kong, it is the buying habit.  The apartment we live in Hong Kong is usually small, and when buying from Costco, every item will be in BULK pack; you don't buy 1 pack of Kit Kat but you have to buy the whole box of 24 packs.  If you buy 4 items, your store room will be full.  So, even the prices are so cheap and quality usually good, Hong Kong people (I mean the majority, not those liiving in luxury flats of 2,500 sq ft) can not afford to store the goods they buy, thus turn back to normal super markets selling individual packs.  When I travel to North America, usually I bring 2 extra cartons of family supply, Chocolate, cookies, even large jars of jam and peanut butter.  What I like the most is Cashew nuts in big jars, so cheap and so tasty.

I really wish that these kind of stores are available in Hong Kong and we, the middle class can enjoy much cheaper products.

The very high price for motor cars are because of its import duty, it can be as high as 120%.  That's why most immigrants to North America bought Mercedes, BMW, because they are just half the price.
