The Israeli consulate in Hong Kong on Thursday slammed comments made by a policeman who said officers were being persecuted like the Jews were during World War Two, saying the reference was "inappropriate and regretful".
A spokeswoman for the consulate said: "We wish no further comparison will be made to the Jewish Holocaust".
The policeman made the comparison when thousands of officers staged an unprecedented show of force on Wednesday, in support of seven policemen who were recently jailed for two years each for beating up activist Ken Tsang during the Occupy protests in 2014.
While calling for legislation to protect officers from being insulted, the policeman also said the situation being faced by them was similar to that of the Jews who were persecuted by the Nazis.
When asked if they agreed with the comparison, the crowd shouted "Yes!"
Meanwhile a former member of the police watchdog questioned the legality of the Wednesday's meeting.
Under the Public Order Ordinance, the police must be notified when more than 500 people gather in a private place. However, the force said the gathering was lawful because it falls under an exemption.
"It seems that the gathering is not in the nature of a conference or seminar to discuss issue," University of Hong Kong legal scholar Eric Cheung said. “Rather it is a kind of public gathering. And if so, then it may not fall within the exemption."
Cheung also said officers took part at the rally may have breached a police regulation asking them not to take part in activities that will affect the public’s perception of their impartiality.
